Assignor

by | Jan 17, 2026

One who assigns or transfers property. In real estate contract law, an assignor is the person or entity that transfers their rights and, in some cases, their obligations under a contract to another party through an assignment. For example, if a buyer under a purchase agreement assigns the contract to a new buyer, the original buyer is the assignor and the new buyer is the assignee. Depending on the contract terms and state law, the assignor may still remain responsible if the contract is not completed, unless the other party agrees in writing to release the assignor from liability.
