Domicile

by | Feb 4, 2026

In real estate and legal contexts, Domicile refers to a person’s legal residence, the place where an individual has their permanent home and to which they intend to return, even if they are temporarily living elsewhere. A person may have multiple residences, but only one domicile at any given time.

Domicile is significant in real estate transactions because it can affect property taxation, homestead exemptions, estate planning, and legal jurisdiction. Establishing domicile generally requires both physical presence in a location and the intent to make it a permanent home, as demonstrated by actions such as registering to vote, filing taxes, or obtaining a driver’s license in that location.
