In real estate, the Government Survey System, also known as the rectangular survey system, is a method used to identify and describe the location of land. It divides land into a grid based on principal meridians and base lines, which serve as reference points for measurement.
From these reference lines, land is divided into townships, ranges, and sections using standard parallels and guide meridians. This system provides a uniform and accurate way to describe land boundaries and is widely used in property descriptions, surveys, and public land records across much of the United States.
