Mortgage Banker

by | Feb 6, 2026

In real estate finance, a mortgage banker is a company that provides mortgage financing using its own funds. Unlike a mortgage broker, which primarily acts as an intermediary between borrowers and lenders, a mortgage banker originates, funds, and often services the loans it makes.

Mortgage bankers may subsequently sell the loans on the secondary market but retain responsibility for loan servicing in many cases. Because they fund loans directly, mortgage bankers play a central role in the availability of mortgage credit and the overall functioning of the real estate finance system.
