Azimuth

An azimuth is a directional measurement used in surveying, navigation, and geospatial mapping to describe the angular relationship between a fixed reference point and a line of travel or boundary. Measured in degrees clockwise from true north, azimuths range from 0° to 360° and provide a continuous system for defining orientation across land parcels, infrastructure corridors, and construction layouts. In real estate and land surveying, azimuths are commonly used to establish precise property boundaries, roadway alignments, utility easements, and subdivision geometry within legal descriptions and topographic surveys.

Azimuth measurements are fundamental to modern geodetic surveying and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), where accurate directional control is necessary for mapping, zoning compliance, and development planning. Surveyors employ azimuths alongside distance measurements, monuments, and coordinate systems to calculate parcel dimensions and spatial relationships between adjoining properties. Because the system eliminates the ambiguity associated with traditional compass bearings, azimuth-based surveying is especially valuable in large-scale development, civil engineering, and infrastructure projects. The term has also gained broader architectural and commercial appeal due to its strong associations with navigation, orientation, and precision.
