“RP Residential” is a property type designation in Portland, Oregon (and in some other jurisdictions) that stands for “Real Property, Residential.” This means that the property is currently used as a residence, and not for commercial or industrial purposes. However, note that included in “residential use” in many areas of Portland is a limited commercial use called a “Accessory Home Occupation.” This usually means that a property may be used as an office address where someone may run a business which has no employees, and some home occupations can include allowing a certain limited number of customers visit each day (for example, a music teacher who teaches students at their home).
The purpose of allowing an accessory home occupation in many residential areas is so that a small business owner (like a violin teacher, for example) cannot be cited by neighbors for violating zoning ordinances simply for running a very small business out of their home.
